Shiqi Ma joined the faculty of 华体会 in the fall of 2024. She holds a PhD from Cornell University, an MA from Harvard University, and a LLB from Peking University. She teaches classes on Chinese politics, urban politics, and mixed methods in political science. Her main research agenda centers on how urban space impacts the power dynamics between the state and society, and how the state’s pursuit of political control and stability reshapes urban space. She is also interested in broader themes of state-society relations under authoritarianism, including censorship and propaganda, public opinions, and prospects for civic engagement in policymaking. Her current book projects explore the political control incentive for authoritarian governments to demolish informal settlements and evict internal migrants in Beijing.
