This course will follow the turbulent history and politics of China from the Boxer Rebellion of 1900 through the post-Mao reforms. Using primary documents, personal accounts, and scholarly studies, students will assess China's political and cultural changes and continuities in historical context. May meet either the Critical Perspectives: Global Cultures or Social Inequality requirement. Meets the Critical Learning: HP requirement. Meets the Equity and Power: EPG requirement.

20th Century China traces the turbulent history and politics of China from the Sino-Japanese War of 1895 to the late 20th century post-Mao reforms.

This course traces the turbulent history and politics of China from the Sino-Japanese War of 1895 to the late 20th century post-Mao reforms. After exploring the nineteenth-century crises facing the last imperial dynasty, it turns to the many cultural, political and social revolutions of twentieth century that transformed China into a modern nation. Using primary documents, personal accounts, and scholarly studies, students will assess China’s political and cultural changes and continuities in historical context in order to understand the country’s journey from traditional empire to global power.
